Fees and Billing
Medicare covers public patient bed fees, x-rays and pathology.
By utilising your private health cover when in Stawell Regional Health you benefit the Hospital in a substantial way. Fees raised by the Hospital are retained by it for use in this community. We bill private health funds on behalf of patients for the majority of inpatient accounts for bed fees, consults, x-ray and some pathology. Some specialists do their own claiming. We have instituted a ‘Simplified Billing’ strategy whereby most private hospital stays will not incur an out-of-pocket fee. For Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card holders, your hospital stay will be fully covered by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA). White Card holders must notify the hospital as soon as possible so your fees can be presented to the DVA for consideration of payment.
Emergency Department: When you are seen in the Emergency Department by a doctor, you will receive an account from them which can be submitted to Medicare, however there will be a gap to pay.
Radiology: For general X-Rays there is no gap, however for an ultrasound or CT examination, a gap payment should be anticipated. All accounts need to be forwarded to Medicare for a rebate.
Pathology: St John of God Pathology charges a fee which is covered mostly by Medicare, however for some examinations there is a gap.
Allied Health: For Allied Health services, such as physiotherapy or podiatry, the fees charged for these services are determined by the Victorian Government Department of Health. These fees change from time to time and there is no Medicare rebate for these fees.
