What is Telehealth

Telehealth is having a consultation with a health care provider by video call. Telehealth uses a video camera and a screen to connect you to your health care provider. This might be your GP, a specialist, an Allied Health professional, or a nurse. Telehealth means you can have your appointment without leaving your home, reducing the need for you to travel to receive care.

How does it work

You can have the appointment in your home (or anywhere that suits) using your own computer, smart phone or tablet. Both parties can see, hear and talk to each other, just like you would if you were face to face.

What will I need
  • You’ll need a reasonably up-to-date device (computer, iPad, tablet or smart phone) with a camera, speakers and microphone (these are often built in to your device)
  • Good connection to the internet. If you can watch a video online (e.g. YouTube) you can make a video call.
What to do before your appointment

Please do a test call when your appointment is booked and again on the day of your appointment. If it doesn’t work on the day, we may need to reschedule your appointment or run it by telephone.

What if the video call does not work on the day

If you can’t get video call to work, or need to cancel, or reschedule your appointment, please call us.

Am I eligble for telehealth

Any patient can be offered telehealth if it is clinically suitable. If you are interested, please talk to your health care provider.

Is it secure

Yes! Video calls are secure, your privacy is protected and no information is stored.

How much internet data will it use?

You don’t use any data while waiting for a clinician to join you. A video consultation uses less than half of the data you would use while watching a YouTube video.
